FAQ
HUGO is the flagship brand of French pickles from Reitzel, a family-run SME founded in 1909 by Hugo Reitzel.
HUGO represents local in a jar, and allows locavores to enjoy 100% French products, with complete transparency! With the ambition of becoming the benchmark for French pickles, HUGO supports the relocalization of gherkins and meets French consumers' need for transparency.
ORIGIN
All our HUGO products are made in France. From seed to jar, our HUGO gherkins are French. First grown and harvested by hand by our twenty or so partner farmers in Brittany, Pays de la Loire and Centre Val de Loire! They are then packed into jars in our production workshop in Montrichard Val de Cher.
What makes our HUGO gherkins so special is their unique packaging process: fresh.
But what does this mean? Very soon after picking, our gherkins are put into jars in our production workshop. This unique know-how enables us to preserve all the organoleptic qualities of the fruit, its color and its inimitable crunchiness!
The other ingredients in our products - vinegar, mustard seeds and shallots - are sourced exclusively in France. Herbs, spices and other seasonings come from France and neighboring European countries.
PACKAGING
Because our commitment to local products isn't just limited to pickles ! In fact, here's all the information you need to know about our product packaging.
Labels: produced in France from FSC-certified mixed or recycled paper. All our labels are then printed in the town of Perrier.
Capsules: These are produced in Massilly, France. The metal used to produce the capsules is partly recycled.
Jars: These are produced in France, partly from recycled materials.
Finally, as you may have noticed, our jars of HUGO gherkins don't contain a sump (a small plastic basket used to remove the gherkins from the jar). Indeed, this is a purely conscious choice as part of our sustainable development approach. We want to limit our use of plastic to take care of our planet. Sustainability is an integral part of HUGO's DNA.
Today, we're offering an alternative to that plastic bowl: wooden pickle tongs! It can be used over and over again, and is made from FSC-certified French wood!
*FSC: Forest Stewardship Council. The FSC is a non-profit association founded in Canada in 1993. It was set up in response to global deforestation, and aims to protect all the world's forests.
